History

The abacus in various forms was used by different ancient civilizations. The Chinese abacus is one of the great inventions of China. During the 17th century, Chinese abacus was introduced to Japan, Korea, Vietnam and Europe. After nearly 2000 years of improvement, this calculation method has become the most popular, simplest and most accurate calculation method. Even as we advance into the technological age, the abacus still has an important role to play.

What is Abacus-Mental Arithmetic?

Abacus-Mental Arithmetic involves first learning how to use the abacus and later how to do mental sums using a set of formulae acquired during the first part of the lessons. At this later stage, learners do not use the abacus and rely solely on their mental memory. Using this method, learners have proven that they are able to calculate large sums at lightning speed, even surpassing those using calculators.

Benefits

This skill has proven to be beneficial in improving one's mental capability, increasing one's speed of response, memory power and concentration power. This course has become a compulsory curriculum in many countries such as Taiwan, China and Japan, and countries such as India, Malaysia and Singapore have introduced the curriculum to schools.
