A parent's guide to playgroup in Singapore.

Everything you need to know before your toddler's first day — ages, costs, what a good session looks like, and how to choose well.

What exactly is a playgroup?

A playgroup is a short, structured programme for toddlers — typically 18 months to 3 years old — that bridges the gap between home and preschool. Unlike full-day childcare, sessions usually run two to three hours, a few mornings or every weekday. The goal isn't academics; it's first friendships, language, independence and a positive feeling about "school" before formal preschool begins.

Why parents enrol (and what the research says)

Between 18 months and 3 years, children's brains form connections faster than at any later point in life. A good playgroup feeds that window with what toddlers need most:

  • Social skills — sharing, turn-taking and playing alongside (then with) other children.
  • Language explosion — songs, stories and phonics at the age vocabulary grows fastest.
  • Independence — pouring, packing up, washing hands; small wins that build confident kids.
  • A gentle runway to preschool — children who've done playgroup typically settle into Nursery with far fewer tears.

How much does playgroup cost in Singapore?

This is where centres differ wildly. Playgroup programmes inside full-fledged preschools often cost $600–$1,500 a month. Standalone neighbourhood playgroups are usually far more affordable. As a reference point, Star Tots Playgroup charges $190/month plus $40/month materials — and was awarded Best Quality Preschool Education at an Affordable Fee by Parents World Singapore. Always ask for the all-in figure: registration, uniform, materials and any annual fees.

Rule of thumb: expensive doesn't equal better at this age. Teacher warmth, class size and a real curriculum matter far more than fancy facilities a toddler won't notice.

What a good session looks like

Beware of playgroups that are just supervised free play. Look for a weekly rhythm where every day builds something different. At Star Tots, for example: Monday is Letterland Phonics, Tuesday thematic English, Wednesday early maths, Thursday Montessori practical life skills, and Friday games, art and science. Two hours, every weekday, following MOE school terms.

How to choose: the shortlist test

  • Ratio: one qualified teacher (plus an assistant) to a class small enough that your child is known by name.
  • Teachers: ask about early-childhood certification — not just "experience with kids".
  • Curriculum: can they tell you what happens on a Tuesday? Vague answers mean no plan.
  • Location: a 10-minute walk beats a 30-minute drive — at this age, consistency wins.
  • Visit first: any centre proud of its classes will happily let you see one.

When should my child start?

Most children are ready around 18 months — walking steadily, curious about other kids, and able to manage a short stretch away from their main caregiver. Some take two weeks to settle, some take two months; both are normal. A good centre will have a settling-in approach rather than expecting day-one independence.
