Abacus classes in Singapore where every child becomes a mental maths champion.

Through the time-tested soroban abacus, children aged 4 to 12 develop lightning-fast mental arithmetic, laser-sharp concentration and a memory that astonishes — all while activating both hemispheres of the brain. The result is a child who doesn't just calculate faster, but thinks more clearly.

What is 3G Abacus?

3G Abacus is a structured mental arithmetic programme built on the soroban — the traditional Japanese-style bead abacus that has trained sharp mathematical minds across Asia for generations.

The soroban works by encoding numbers as physical bead positions on a frame. As children practise moving beads to add, subtract, multiply and divide, they gradually internalise the abacus as a vivid mental image. At the advanced levels, students perform complex calculations entirely in their heads — no pen, no calculator, no abacus in hand — by visualising the bead movements they have rehearsed thousands of times. This mental image technique, known as anzan, is what produces the remarkable calculation speeds that 3G Abacus students are known for.

The "3G" philosophy sets Edufarm's programme apart. Three-Generation Abacus is designed to be transparent and accessible — parents can understand and follow the method, making it easy to support practice at home. This family continuity accelerates progress and reinforces the habit of mental calculation across everyday life. At Edufarm, where we have been nurturing curious young learners since 2002, 3G Abacus is one of our most enduring enrichment offerings, refined through thousands of student hours into a programme that is both rigorous and genuinely enjoyable for children.

Six ways abacus builds your child.

The benefits of abacus training extend far beyond faster arithmetic — they shape how a child learns, concentrates and remembers across every subject.

Speed mental arithmetic

Students learn to calculate multi-digit sums, differences, products and quotients faster than a calculator — entirely in their head.

🎯

Concentration & focus

Abacus practice demands sustained, precise attention. Over time this builds the ability to focus deeply — a skill that transfers directly to school and study.

🧠

Memory & visualisation

Holding a mental abacus image and updating it through a calculation trains working memory and visual-spatial reasoning simultaneously.

🔄

Both-brain activation

The physical manipulation of beads engages the right hemisphere; the logical arithmetic engages the left. 3G Abacus is one of the few activities that trains both in tandem.

📐

Foundation for maths confidence

A child who can calculate quickly and accurately arrives at every maths lesson with an edge — number sense becomes instinctive rather than effortful.

🪆

Fun, hands-on learning

The tactile click of beads keeps young children engaged in a way that worksheets alone cannot. Abacus feels like a skill — because it is one.

A clear path from beads to brilliance.

The 3G Abacus curriculum follows a carefully sequenced progression. Every child starts at the right entry point and advances only when they are genuinely ready.

Beginner
Bead familiarisation & single-digit arithmetic Children learn the value, position and movement of each bead type. They practise single-digit addition and subtraction, building the muscle memory and visual habits that all later levels depend on. By the end of Beginner level, every student can manipulate the abacus with natural fluency.
Intermediate
Multi-digit operations — carry, borrow, multiply & divide Students extend to multi-digit addition and subtraction, mastering the carry and borrow techniques that require mental coordination across multiple bead columns. Multiplication and division are introduced progressively, with increasing speed targets at each sub-level. Mental arithmetic without looking at the bead frame begins here.
Advanced
Full mental arithmetic & speed drills The physical abacus is set aside. Students perform all calculations by visualising the bead frame in their mind — anzan. Timed speed drills sharpen accuracy under pressure. Advanced students regularly achieve calculation speeds that rival electronic calculators, and many go on to represent Edufarm in abacus competitions.

Frequently asked questions.

Everything parents want to know before getting started.

What is 3G Abacus?

3G Abacus (Three-Generation Abacus) is a structured mental arithmetic programme based on the soroban-style bead abacus. The "3G" name reflects the programme's philosophy: the skill is accessible and beneficial across three generations — children master it, and parents can follow along and reinforce learning at home. Edufarm has offered 3G Abacus as part of its award-winning enrichment programmes since 2002.

What age is the 3G Abacus programme for?

3G Abacus is designed for children aged 4 to 12 years, from Nursery 2 (N2) through Primary 6 (P6). Classes are grouped by level so each child progresses at the right pace, regardless of when they join.

How does abacus mental arithmetic help my child?

Regular abacus practice trains both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. Children develop speed mental arithmetic, sharper concentration and focus, stronger working memory, and visual-spatial reasoning — skills that underpin confidence in mathematics and strong academic performance across all subjects.

How many levels are there in the programme?

The programme progresses through three broad stages: Beginner (bead familiarisation and single-digit arithmetic), Intermediate (multi-digit calculations including carry, borrow, multiplication and division), and Advanced (full mental arithmetic without the physical abacus, with speed drills). Each stage has progressive sub-levels, and students advance when they demonstrate genuine mastery.

Where are 3G Abacus classes held?

3G Abacus classes are held at Edufarm Learning Centre locations across Singapore. Call 6715 8458 or WhatsApp 9186 6763 to find the nearest centre offering abacus and to check class availability and schedules.

How do I register my child for 3G Abacus?
