PSLE Science answering technique — what actually earns the mark.

Knowing the science and writing the answer that scores it are two different skills. Here is the structure PSLE Science markers are actually looking for, by question type, with real examples.

Why "knowing it" isn't the same as "scoring it"

PSLE Science markers award marks for precise, syllabus-aligned phrasing in open-ended answers, not just the right general idea. A child can genuinely understand why an ice cube melts faster in a black cup and still lose the mark for writing "because it gets hot" instead of naming the concept the marker is looking for. That gap — between understanding and the words that earn credit — is what this guide is about.

The five themes, briefly

Every PSLE Science question sits inside one of five themes: Diversity, Cycles, Systems, Interactions and Energy — together covering the full Biology, Physics and Chemistry content tested. Start by identifying the command word

Before writing anything, the command word tells you what kind of answer is expected. Answering the wrong kind is one of the most common ways marks are lost — a child who explains when the question only asked them to describe has done more work and still not answered what was asked.

  • State — give the correct term or fact. No reasoning needed, and adding some rarely earns extra credit.
  • Describe — say what happens or what is observed. No "why" required.
  • Explain — say why it happens, linking the observation to a named science concept. This is where most marks are lost.
  • Predict — use a pattern already shown in the question to say what would happen next or in a new situation.
  • Suggest — give one reasonable, justified idea. Suggest questions often accept more than one valid answer, provided it is properly reasoned.

The Aim question — name both variables

Aim questions test whether a child can identify the Changed Variable (CV) — the one thing deliberately altered — and the Result Variable (RV) — the one thing measured to see the effect. The answer follows a fixed template: "To find out if [CV] affects [RV]."

Example: a plant is given different amounts of sunlight and its height is measured after two weeks. The Aim is "To find out if the amount of sunlight affects the height of the plant." A vague answer like "to see what happens to the plant" names neither variable and earns no mark, even though it isn't wrong.

The Fair Test question — one variable at a time

A fair test only changes the Changed Variable — every other variable that could affect the result must be kept the same, and the answer needs to say why. The template: "For a fair test, only [CV] is changed, while [other variables] are kept the same. This is to make sure [RV] is affected only by [CV] and not by anything else."

Example: testing whether the amount of sunlight affects plant height means the amount of water, the type of soil and the size of the pot must all stay identical across every plant in the test — naming at least one of these controlled variables, not just saying "keep everything else the same," is usually what the mark is for.

The Explain question — Evidence + Concept

Explain answers need two parts, and a mark is usually lost when only one is present. Evidence is the specific observation or data point given in the question. Concept is the named scientific principle that explains it. Evidence alone describes what happened without saying why; a concept alone floats free without being tied to what the question actually showed.

Example: "The ice cube in the black cup melted faster than the one in the white cup (evidence) because black surfaces absorb more heat energy than white surfaces (concept)." Either half alone is an incomplete answer — and a common one.

Where marks actually go missing

Across the question types above, the same few habits account for most of the marks lost by students who genuinely know the content:

  • Vague causal language. "Because it is hot" or "because of the weather" names no concept a marker can credit — the specific term (heat energy, evaporation, friction) is what scores.
  • Right idea, wrong keyword. A correct explanation in the child's own words, missing the exact syllabus term, often earns partial or no credit.
  • Answering only half of an Explain question. Evidence without concept, or concept without evidence — both are incomplete on their own.
  • Not reading the diagram or table first. Many open-ended questions give the CV and RV directly in a table or graph — missing this means guessing at variables the question already named.
