The year before Primary 1 is the one that sets the foundation. Edufarm's P1 Prep covers the English and Maths skills every child needs to start P1 confident — not catching up.
Two subjects. One focused year. Everything your child needs for a strong start to Primary 1.
P1 English moves faster than most families expect. Our programme consolidates phonics (so children decode unfamiliar words confidently), builds vocabulary through thematic units, introduces sentence construction and punctuation, and develops early reading comprehension habits. By the end of K2, children should be reading simple books independently and writing complete, correctly punctuated sentences — the baseline P1 teachers expect from day one.
P1 Maths introduces heuristics and structured problem-solving that look very different from preschool number play. We cover numbers to 100, addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, basic geometry (shapes, patterns), measurement (length, mass, time), and — crucially — how to read and set up word problems. Children who arrive at P1 already comfortable with these concepts do not just get better marks; they develop a maths confidence that compounds year on year.
What separates P1 Prep from preschool is not just the subject content — it is the habits and routines that make school work.
1.5 hours of structured, teacher-led work builds the attention span that P1 demands — many children have never sat that long before.
Reading questions carefully, attempting before asking, checking work — these habits are taught explicitly in P1 Prep and expected immediately in school.
When children recognise the content on their first P1 worksheet, confidence builds. Early confidence compounds into a growth mindset that carries through PSLE and beyond.
A typical P1 Prep timeline for a child entering Primary 1 in January.
Phonics consolidation, numbers to 20, basic sentence writing, classroom routines and focus habits. Children settling into the twice-weekly schedule.
Numbers to 100, addition and subtraction, reading comprehension strategies, vocabulary expansion, spelling patterns, independent writing of 3–4 sentences.
Shapes and measurement, simple word problems, paragraph writing, reading books at P1 level. Practice with worksheet formats and question types.
Consolidation and revision. Timed practice in exam-style formats. Confidence check — by December, children should feel genuinely ready.
P1 Prep is designed for K2 children — 6-year-olds who will enter Primary 1 in the following January. It runs in the year before big school and is specifically paced for this age group.
Classes run twice a week, 1.5 hours per session. English and Mathematics are either covered in a single session or on alternating days depending on the centre schedule.
Kindergarten and P1 Prep serve different purposes. Kindergarten is a holistic early childhood environment. P1 Prep is specifically calibrated to the Primary 1 MOE curriculum — the specific question types, the worksheet formats, the pacing and the vocabulary that will appear in your child's P1 textbooks. Many families complement their child's kindergarten with P1 Prep to close the gap.
P1 Prep is a proactive readiness programme — it builds foundations ahead of Primary 1. Primary tuition addresses specific subject gaps after school has begun. P1 Prep students often need less tuition support in P1 and P2 because they started ahead.
Children finishing Level 2 Letterland Phonics during K2 can advance to Level 3 — complex digraphs, long vowel patterns, and independent reading fluency — alongside P1 Prep.
