More than a durian outing

Everyone in Singapore has an opinion about durian — but few of us know how the fruit actually grows, why one durian is prized over another, or how a seasoned seller reads a husk in seconds. This programme turns durian into a story worth learning, guided from start to finish and paced gently for seniors.

Participants learn where durians are grown and how the tree fruits, meet the common varieties and their different flavours and textures, then watch a live demonstration on how to examine and choose a good durian, followed by a safe opening demonstration. The experience ends with a guided tasting where everyone can enjoy fresh durian, compare notes and simply enjoy each other's company. Learning, sensory discovery, cultural appreciation and good conversation, in one relaxed session.

What participants will experience.

From orchard to tasting table — the whole story of the fruit, hands-off and unhurried.

🌳

Where durian grows

Learn where durians are commonly grown and the conditions a healthy durian tree needs — and how weather, soil, tree age and growing conditions can shape the fruit.

🌸

The durian life cycle

Follow the fruit from flowering and pollination through fruit development, harvesting and ripening — the journey behind every durian on the table.

🥭

Varieties & characteristics

Meet common durian varieties and how they differ in flavour, texture, aroma, colour and character — the vocabulary that turns tasting into appreciation.

🔍

How to pick a good one

Watch a live demonstration of what experienced sellers look for — the shape, husk, stem, aroma, seams and ripeness that separate a good durian from a dud.

🔪

A safe opening demonstration

See a facilitator-led demonstration of how a durian is opened, and the tools, techniques and safety precautions involved — no sharp tools in participants' hands.

🍽

Guided tasting & company

Take part in a guided tasting and appreciation session, then relax, reminisce and socialise over fresh durian with the rest of the group.

Frequently asked questions.

Is this just a durian-eating session?

No. It's a guided learning journey. Participants learn how durians are grown, follow the fruit's life cycle, discover different varieties, and watch a live demonstration on how to select and safely open a durian — before a guided tasting and appreciation session. The tasting is the finale, not the whole programme.

Who is the Durian Learning Journey for?

It's designed primarily for seniors and Active Ageing Centre participants, and it also suits senior activity groups, community organisations, Residents' Networks and community clubs, corporate senior-engagement programmes, family and intergenerational groups, and adult-learning and cultural-interest groups.

Which durian varieties are served, and how much durian is provided?

Durian varieties are subject to seasonal and market availability, so the varieties served and the quantity provided may differ between sessions. We'll confirm what's likely to be available when you enquire, closer to your preferred date.

Do participants open the durians themselves?

No. The durian-opening segment is a facilitator-led demonstration. Participants should not handle sharp opening tools unless an activity has been specifically designed, risk-assessed and supervised for hands-on participation.

Is it suitable for participants with allergies or dietary or medical concerns?

Please inform the organiser in advance of any allergies, dietary concerns, medical considerations or special assistance needs. Durian may not be suitable for every participant, and participants should follow advice from their doctor or healthcare professional where relevant.

Can the programme be adjusted for our group's needs?

Yes. Programme details can be customised according to group size, venue, timing, transport needs and learning objectives. Venue accessibility and support arrangements can be discussed based on the needs of the participating group, and bilingual facilitation can be arranged in advance. WhatsApp 9186 6763 to discuss.
